How this course runs

This is not a video course. All 18 classes are taught live, on Zoom or Google Meet, with your instructor and the rest of the group at a fixed time each week. You speak, you get corrected, and you can stop and ask a question the way you would in a room.

It runs in 4 sections, from “N4 foundations and kanji” through to “JLPT N4 review”, in that order, one section at a time.

Between classes the group has its own WhatsApp thread, where your instructor answers questions himself rather than a support desk.

What you will learn

You arrive able to read kana and leave able to hold the conversation you could previously only follow. Eighteen classes on the grammar N4 actually tests: the past, conditional and potential forms, giving advice, explaining a reason, comparing two things and saying which one you prefer.

The change most students notice is register. You move between polite Japanese and the casual speech friends use, and choose between them without stopping to think. Announcements in a station or a shop stop being noise, because you catch the main point the first time it is said.

By the last block you are reading everyday texts with the wider kanji set, and you sit a full N4 mock paper with your instructor going through what you missed and why.

Before you start

You should be reading hiragana and katakana without having to work at it, and carrying roughly the grammar and vocabulary the N5 paper covers, whether or not you sat it. Bring a textbook, printed or on a screen, and a notebook you actually write in. A good deal of N4 is drilling forms until they stop being decisions.
