How this course runs
This is not a video course. All 15 classes are taught live, on Zoom or Google Meet, with your instructor and the rest of the group at a fixed time each week. You speak, you get corrected, and you can stop and ask a question the way you would in a room.
It runs in 6 sections, from “Preparation for this course” through to “Lessons 11–15: Review and JLPT preparation”, in that order, one section at a time.
This intake takes 30 students. Between classes the group has its own WhatsApp thread, where your instructor answers questions himself rather than a support desk.

What you will learn
By the last of the fifteen classes you read hiragana and katakana without sounding them out, and the N5 kanji on a shop sign or a form are characters you recognise rather than shapes you guess at. You can introduce yourself, ask what something costs, order food, and follow a slow conversation about where someone lives and what they do.
That is the ground the JLPT N5 covers: the two kana sets, around a hundred kanji, the core grammar patterns and the everyday vocabulary they sit in. The difference between reading that list and passing the paper is having said all of it out loud to a teacher who corrected you, which is the only thing the live classes are for.
You also leave with a study routine you have already been running for four weeks, which is what carries you from the last class to the exam date.

Before you start
You can start this course with no Japanese at all. The first section is the preparation: hiragana and katakana, how each one is pronounced and how each one is written. What you do need is the PDF textbook printed and beside you in class, a notebook, and some time between lessons for the vocabulary and grammar lists, which is where most of it sticks.
Who this is for
This is for people sitting the JLPT N5, and equally for people with no exam in mind who want to hold a conversation. Teaching is in English, so you do not need Japanese to follow the class, only a willingness to speak in front of a small group. If you are heading towards business Japanese later, this is the level the rest of it is built on.
